What is a commercial bus or coach?

Commercial buses and coaches are passenger-carrying vehicles (PCVs) designed to move groups of people for hire or reward. Buses typically serve scheduled, fare-paying public transport routes; coaches are designed for longer-distance travel, charter work, tours and private hire, with greater luggage capacity and higher specification interiors. Both categories require operators to hold a PSV Operator’s Licence, drivers to hold Category D entitlement, and vehicles to be COIF-tested (Certificate of Initial Fitness) and subject to annual MOT.

The bus and coach market is specialist, broker-led and historically opaque. The Commercial Trader brings transparency and direct seller access into a single searchable platform.

  • Wide vehicle range: from sub-20-seat coaches up to 90+ seat double-deck and articulated formats.
  • Direct seller contact: every listing includes seller details for direct discussion of specs, mileage, condition and inspection.
  • Established brands: listings frequently feature Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Alexander Dennis, Wright Brothers, Optare, MAN, VDL, Setra, Plaxton and Caetano.
  • UK-wide stock: vehicles listed from operators, dealers and end-users across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Why buy a used bus or coach?

The used PCV market underpins most fleet renewal in the UK. Even major operators run mixed-age fleets for sound commercial reasons.

  • Major capital savings: used coaches typically cost 30-60% less than new equivalents, which is significant on £200,000+ vehicles.
  • Immediate availability: new vehicles can have 12-24 month lead times. Used stock is available within weeks.
  • Refurbishment options: established brands have strong UK aftermarket support, with refurbishment specialists offering interior refits, repaints and engine rebuilds.
  • Proven track record: vehicles with documented operating history, mileage and MOT records offer evidence of reliability.

Lower depreciation curve: newer used vehicles in the 3-7 year range often offer the best value-per-pound, with most depreciation already absorbed.

Single decker buses

Single decker buses serve most UK urban and inter-urban routes, with typical seat counts from 30 to 50 plus standing room. Common models include the Wright StreetLite, Alexander Dennis Enviro200, Optare Solo, Volvo B5LH and Mercedes-Benz Citaro.

Double decker buses

Double decker buses maximise capacity (60-90 seats plus standing) on a standard footprint, which is essential for high-volume city routes. Wright Eclipse Gemini, Alexander Dennis Enviro400 and Volvo B5LH/B5TL are the most common UK models.

City buses

City buses are optimised for short urban routes with low-floor, fast-loading bodies and multiple doors. Often available as Euro 6 diesel, hybrid, fully electric or hydrogen variants.

Executive coaches

Executive coaches add premium interior trim, leather seats, tables, USB charging, on-board toilets and entertainment systems for corporate and high-spec leisure work. Typical seat counts run 32 to 53.

Midi coaches

Midi coaches (typically 24 to 35 seats) suit smaller groups, tight-access routes and rural work. Popular for school transport, group tours and corporate shuttles.

School buses

School buses serve home-to-school transport contracts, college and university shuttles, and specialist transport for SEND pupils. Typically high seat-count, robust trim and straightforward maintenance.

  • Passenger capacity: specify seat count and (for buses) standing capacity. Match capacity carefully to your route demand to avoid over- or under-specifying.
  • Mileage: under 250,000km is typically considered low for a coach; 250,000-500,000km mid-life; 500,000-1,000,000km high but viable; quality vehicles regularly exceed 1,000,000km.
  • Euro emissions rating: Euro 6 is required for compliant operation in Clean Air Zones (Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Tyneside, Portsmouth) and Bus and Coach LEZ areas including London ULEZ.
  • Fuel type and powertrain: diesel remains dominant. Hybrid, electric and hydrogen options grow rapidly with ZEBRA funding and operator decarbonisation targets.
  • Floor type: low-floor for accessible service routes; step-entrance for charter work where luggage holds matter more.
  • Interior specification: seat type, fabric grade, seat pitch, USB ports, table fitments, on-board toilet, climate control and Wi-Fi all affect both purchase price and chartering value.
  • MOT and PSV inspection history: review records for recurring defects, ABS faults, brake issues and structural concerns.

Yes, UK law requires Category D entitlement to drive vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats for hire or reward. Drivers also need a current Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), which involves 35 hours of approved training every 5 years. Operators need a PSV Operator’s Licence and must comply with all Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) requirements.

Quality buses and coaches commonly run for 12-20 years in front-line service, often longer in lighter duty applications. Vehicles on tour work might cover 1,000,000+ km over their working life; urban service vehicles might cover 600,000-900,000km in shorter, harder stop-start cycles. Engine, gearbox and structural longevity depend heavily on maintenance discipline and operating conditions.

As we’re a marketplace, any returns policy must be agreed directly with the seller before purchase. Pre-purchase inspection (engineer’s report, MOT and DVSA download review, structural and brake assessment) is essential. Many sellers will accommodate inspection at their depot. Some may permit a short trial period.
