What is an industrial column?

An industrial column (also called a tower) is a tall vertical process vessel used for separating mixtures by exploiting differences in volatility, solubility or distribution between phases. Columns are central to chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food processing, carrying out distillation, absorption, stripping, extraction and related mass-transfer operations. The separation happens across internals, either trays (plates) or packing, that create the vapour-liquid or liquid-liquid contact needed for mass transfer. Industrial columns are typically specified by diameter, height, number of theoretical stages, internals type, design pressure, design temperature and materials of construction.

How long do industrial columns last?

Quality industrial columns routinely operate for 30-50+ years. The pressure-containing shell typically lasts the working life of the asset, with periodic PSSR inspection confirming integrity. Column internals (trays, packing, distributors) may need replacement or upgrade every 10-25 years as throughput changes or fouling occurs, but the column shell itself lasts for decades.

Why choose an industrial column?

Columns are fundamental to virtually every process that needs to separate or purify a mixture, underpinning product quality and process economics.

  • High-efficiency separation: well-designed columns deliver sharp separations with high purity, supporting product specification and process yield.
  • Energy recovery integration: modern columns integrate with heat recovery, reboiler and condenser systems to minimise energy consumption.
  • Flexible internals: trays and packing can be selected and upgraded to optimise capacity, efficiency and pressure drop for specific duties.
  • Wide service envelope: columns handle vacuum through high pressure, cryogenic through high temperature, and benign through highly corrosive service with appropriate materials.
  • Continuous high-throughput operation: columns support continuous, steady-state separation at throughputs from pilot scale up to very large petrochemical operations.

Why buy a used industrial column?

Industrial columns are strong candidates for second-hand purchase given the long working life of the pressure-containing shell.

  • Major capital savings: used columns typically cost 40-70% less than new equivalents, with very significant savings on large or alloy-construction columns.
  • Immediate availability: new columns can have lead times of 12-24 months. Used stock can be available within weeks.
  • Internals upgrade options: trays and packing can be replaced or upgraded to suit a new duty, effectively repurposing a used column shell.
  • Documented certification: columns with current PED/UKCA certification and PSSR inspection records give clear evidence of integrity.
  • Strong UK aftermarket: Sulzer, Koch-Glitsch, RVT and other internals specialists support tray and packing replacement, upgrades and recertification.

Types of industrial columns for sale

Distillation columns

Distillation columns separate liquid mixtures by boiling point difference, the most widely used separation in chemical and petrochemical processing. Continuous and batch designs serve different operations. Common in solvent recovery, petrochemical fractionation, spirit distillation and chemical purification. Both tray and packed designs feature.

Absorption columns

Absorption (scrubbing) columns remove components from a gas stream by contact with an absorbing liquid. Common in gas scrubbing, emissions control, acid gas removal and product recovery. Packed columns dominate for absorption duties.

Stripping columns

Stripping columns remove volatile components from a liquid stream by contact with a stripping gas or steam. Common in wastewater treatment (VOC removal), solvent recovery, deaeration and product purification.

Extraction columns

Liquid-liquid extraction columns separate components between two immiscible liquid phases. Rotating disc contactors (RDC), pulsed columns and packed extraction columns serve pharmaceutical, petrochemical and specialty chemical extractions.

Packed and tray columns

Columns are configured with either structured/random packing (Sulzer, Koch-Glitsch, Raschig) for low pressure drop and high efficiency, or trays (sieve, valve, bubble cap) for high capacity and fouling service. Internals selection significantly affects column performance.

Key features to consider when buying an industrial column

  • Diameter and height: diameter sets capacity; height (and number of stages) sets separation capability. Match both to your throughput and purity requirements.
  • Internals type: trays for high capacity and fouling service; structured packing for high efficiency and low pressure drop; random packing for corrosive and varying duties.
  • Materials of construction: 316L stainless for most duties; duplex for chlorides; specialty alloys for corrosive service; carbon steel for benign hydrocarbon service.
  • Design pressure and temperature: vacuum columns need vacuum rating; pressure columns need PED/UKCA certification. PSSR inspection applies in service.
  • Number of theoretical stages: determines separation capability. Confirm the column can achieve your required separation with available internals.
  • Ancillary equipment: reboilers, condensers, reflux drums, distributors and instrumentation are integral to column operation. Confirm what’s included.
  • ATEX and certification: essential for flammable service. Verify current PED/UKCA and ATEX certification on used columns.

Industries and use cases for industrial columns

  • Chemical and petrochemical: solvent recovery, fractionation, product purification and intermediate separation.
  • Pharmaceutical and fine chemicals: solvent recovery, API purification and specialty chemical separation.
  • Food and beverage: spirit distillation, flavour and fragrance separation, and edible oil processing.
  • Environmental and water treatment: VOC stripping, gas scrubbing, emissions control and wastewater treatment.
  • Oil and gas: gas processing, acid gas removal, glycol regeneration and hydrocarbon fractionation.
  • Specialty chemicals: high-purity separations, extraction and specialty product purification.

What locations do we serve for industrial columns?

As a buyer-to-seller marketplace, we feature industrial columns from sellers across the UK and beyond. Use our location and distance filters to find equipment near your facility, supporting site visits and reducing transport costs on tall column installations.

Can I return an industrial column?

As we operate as a buyer-to-seller marketplace, any returns policy must be agreed directly with the seller before purchase. We’d recommend pre-purchase inspection of any used column, including review of pressure certification, PSSR inspection records, internals condition and any thickness measurement reports.
