Industrial conveying systems are mechanical or pneumatic assemblies that move materials, components or finished products from one point to another within a facility. They range from simple gravity roller tracks through to fully automated, multi-hundred-metre integrated lines combining belts, elevators, diverters and sortation. Conveyors are found in virtually every manufacturing, warehousing, food processing, mining and logistics operation, and typically account for a major share of the capital cost of an automated production line.
Conveyor structures (frames, supports, pulleys) commonly last 20-30+ years. Wear components, belts, rollers, chains, bearings and motors, typically last 5-15 years depending on duty, but can all be replaced as consumables. A good steel conveyor frame often outlasts several belt changes.
Automated conveying delivers step-change improvements in throughput, labour cost and safety compared with manual handling.
Higher throughput: continuous movement handles far greater volumes than intermittent manual handling, bottleneck-by-bottleneck.
Reduced labour cost: automating materials movement frees staff for higher-value tasks and cuts manual handling risk.
Lower injury risk: repetitive lifting, carrying and pulling cause the majority of workplace musculoskeletal injuries. Conveyors remove most of that risk.
Predictable, metered flow: set-speed conveyors regulate production pace, feed downstream machines correctly and smooth out bottlenecks.
Integration with automation: modern conveyors integrate with PLC control, vision systems and WMS/MES software for full traceability.
Used conveyors are a particularly attractive buy because the structural components are extremely long-lived:
Major capital savings: used conveyor systems often cost 40-70% less than new-build equivalents.
Immediate availability: new conveyor projects can take 12-20 weeks to design, manufacture and commission. Used systems are available in weeks.
Refurbishable: belts, rollers, bearings and motors are all routine consumables. A refurbished used conveyor performs like new.
Reconfigurable: modular conveyor sections can be cut, extended or reconfigured to suit your layout.
The most versatile conveyor type, handling packaged goods, loose solids, food products and components. Flat belt designs suit packages and cartons; troughed belts handle bulk solids. Typical belt widths range from 300mm to 2,000mm; lengths from 1m to hundreds of metres.
Gravity or powered rollers suit boxes, cases, totes and pallets with flat, rigid bases. Gravity roller sections are economical for short transfers and accumulation; powered roller (driven by chain, line-shaft or 24V zone drives) supports longer runs and controlled flow.
Heavy-duty chain conveyors handle pallets, heavy assemblies and hot/abrasive materials that would damage belts. Common in automotive, foundry, steel mill and heavy manufacturing environments.
Rotating helical screws inside tubes or troughs move powders, granules, flakes and sludges. Common in grain handling, food, cement, chemicals and waste treatment. Typical sizes range from 100mm to 600mm diameter; flexible screws handle longer unsupported runs.
Air-based systems transport powders, pellets and granules through pipe networks, either dilute phase (high velocity, low pressure) or dense phase (low velocity, high pressure, gentler on fragile product). Common in food, plastics, pharma and chemicals where sealed, dust-free transfer matters.
Vertical conveyors for bulk solids, agricultural grain, flour, cement, aggregates, feed. Buckets attached to belts or chains lift product from intake to discharge, typically with capacities from 10 to 500+ tonnes per hour.
Suspended conveyors save floor space and are standard in automotive paint lines, garment handling and meat processing. Power-and-free designs allow individual carriers to stop independently for work stations.
As a buyer-to-seller marketplace, we feature industrial conveying systems from sellers across the UK and beyond. Use our location and distance filters to find equipment near your facility, which can significantly reduce transport costs for heavy or awkward machinery.
