An industrial heat exchanger is a piece of process equipment that transfers thermal energy between two or more fluid streams without mixing them. The streams flow through a network of plates, tubes or other heat transfer surfaces, with heat passing through the metal between them. Heat exchangers are fundamental to almost every process industry, used for heating, cooling, condensing, evaporating, pasteurising and waste heat recovery. They’re typically specified by heat transfer area (m²), heat duty (kW or MW), design pressure and temperature, materials of construction and approach temperature (the closest temperature difference between the streams).
Quality industrial heat exchangers routinely operate for 25-40+ years. Shell and tube units with corrosion-resistant alloys can serve 40-50 years on benign duty. Plate heat exchangers may need plate replacement every 10-20 years on aggressive duty, but the frame and connections last decades. Tube bundle replacement and gasket renewal are routine maintenance items, both extending working life significantly.

The most widely used industrial heat exchanger design. A bundle of tubes inside a shell carries one fluid; the other fluid flows around the tubes. Designs include fixed tubesheet, U-tube, floating head and TEMA-classified configurations. Suit high pressures, high temperatures and dirty or fouling fluids. Common in oil and gas, chemical, power generation and HVAC.
Stacked corrugated plates create flow channels for two fluids in alternating channels, delivering very high heat transfer coefficients in compact units. Gasketed plate heat exchangers (GPHEs) are easily opened for cleaning and plate replacement. Brazed and welded plate variants suit higher pressures and aggressive media. Common manufacturers include Alfa Laval, GEA, SPX FLOW (APV), Tranter, Kelvion and HRS.
Compact brazed plate units use copper or nickel brazing to seal stacked plates, eliminating gaskets. Suit higher pressures (up to 45 bar typical), refrigeration, HVAC and small process duties. Compact, robust and economical for the right applications.
Forced or induced-draft fans pass ambient air over finned-tube bundles to cool process fluids. Common where cooling water is unavailable or expensive, including refineries, gas processing plants and remote sites. Energy demand is higher than water cooling but operating costs and environmental impact can be lower.
Spiral plate heat exchangers handle slurries and high-viscosity fluids; double-pipe designs serve smaller specialist duties; scraped-surface heat exchangers handle viscous, crystallising or particulate-laden products in food and chemical processing; tube-in-shell evaporators support concentration and crystallisation.
