What is an industrial heat exchanger?

An industrial heat exchanger is a piece of process equipment that transfers thermal energy between two or more fluid streams without mixing them. The streams flow through a network of plates, tubes or other heat transfer surfaces, with heat passing through the metal between them. Heat exchangers are fundamental to almost every process industry, used for heating, cooling, condensing, evaporating, pasteurising and waste heat recovery. They’re typically specified by heat transfer area (m²), heat duty (kW or MW), design pressure and temperature, materials of construction and approach temperature (the closest temperature difference between the streams).

How long do industrial heat exchangers last?

Quality industrial heat exchangers routinely operate for 25-40+ years. Shell and tube units with corrosion-resistant alloys can serve 40-50 years on benign duty. Plate heat exchangers may need plate replacement every 10-20 years on aggressive duty, but the frame and connections last decades. Tube bundle replacement and gasket renewal are routine maintenance items, both extending working life significantly.

Why choose an industrial heat exchanger?

Heat exchangers underpin process efficiency, energy recovery and product quality across every industry that handles thermal energy.

  • Energy efficiency: waste heat recovery from process streams reduces fuel use, cuts emissions and lowers operating costs by 20-50% on many duties.
  • Process control: precise temperature control supports product quality, reaction selectivity, crystallisation and food product specification.
  • Compact, scalable design: modern plate heat exchangers deliver MW-scale duty in floor footprints far smaller than equivalent shell and tube units.
  • Wide service envelope: specialist designs cover cryogenic operation through to high-temperature reactor service, with materials matched to corrosive, abrasive or fouling fluids.
  • Hygienic options for food and pharma: sanitary plate heat exchangers support pasteurisation, UHT processing, sterilisation and CIP/SIP cycles.

Why buy a used industrial heat exchanger?

Heat exchangers are excellent used-market candidates because the main pressure-containing components last for decades.

  • Major capital savings: used heat exchangers typically cost 40-60% less than new, with significant savings on shell and tube units in alloy materials.
  • Immediate availability: new heat exchangers in alloy materials can have lead times of 6-12 months. Used stock is often available within weeks.
  • Easy refurbishment: tube bundle replacement, gasket renewal, plate refurbishment and rechroming all return used heat exchangers to as-new condition.
  • Proven service history: documented operating history demonstrates reliability and gives confidence on alloy and gasket compatibility.
  • Strong aftermarket support: Alfa Laval, GEA, SPX FLOW (APV), Tranter, Kelvion and HRS all have strong UK aftermarket networks supporting plates, gaskets and parts.

Types of industrial heat exchangers for sale

Shell and tube heat exchangers

The most widely used industrial heat exchanger design. A bundle of tubes inside a shell carries one fluid; the other fluid flows around the tubes. Designs include fixed tubesheet, U-tube, floating head and TEMA-classified configurations. Suit high pressures, high temperatures and dirty or fouling fluids. Common in oil and gas, chemical, power generation and HVAC.

Plate heat exchangers (PHEs)

Stacked corrugated plates create flow channels for two fluids in alternating channels, delivering very high heat transfer coefficients in compact units. Gasketed plate heat exchangers (GPHEs) are easily opened for cleaning and plate replacement. Brazed and welded plate variants suit higher pressures and aggressive media. Common manufacturers include Alfa Laval, GEA, SPX FLOW (APV), Tranter, Kelvion and HRS.

Brazed plate heat exchangers

Compact brazed plate units use copper or nickel brazing to seal stacked plates, eliminating gaskets. Suit higher pressures (up to 45 bar typical), refrigeration, HVAC and small process duties. Compact, robust and economical for the right applications.

Air-cooled heat exchangers

Forced or induced-draft fans pass ambient air over finned-tube bundles to cool process fluids. Common where cooling water is unavailable or expensive, including refineries, gas processing plants and remote sites. Energy demand is higher than water cooling but operating costs and environmental impact can be lower.

Specialist designs

Spiral plate heat exchangers handle slurries and high-viscosity fluids; double-pipe designs serve smaller specialist duties; scraped-surface heat exchangers handle viscous, crystallising or particulate-laden products in food and chemical processing; tube-in-shell evaporators support concentration and crystallisation.

Key features to consider when buying an industrial heat exchanger

  • Heat transfer area (m²): matches duty to surface area. Plate heat exchangers achieve very high heat transfer per m²; shell and tube needs more surface for the same duty.
  • Design pressure and temperature: must envelope your operating conditions plus margin. Pressure vessels are PED/UKCA-rated and subject to PSSR inspection.
  • Materials of construction: 316L stainless for general food and chemical duty; duplex/super-duplex for chlorides and seawater; titanium for very corrosive service; carbon steel for benign duty; alloy 825/Hastelloy for severe corrosion.
  • Approach temperature and pinch: lower approach temperatures need more heat transfer area and capital. The pinch analysis matters for energy recovery installations.
  • Cleanability: plate heat exchangers open easily for inspection and cleaning. Shell and tube needs tube-side and shell-side cleaning routes. Match design to fouling tendency of your fluids.
  • Gasket compatibility (PHE): EPDM, NBR, FPM (Viton), HNBR and FKM gaskets each suit different chemistries and temperatures. Verify gasket compatibility with your products.
  • Hygiene and certification: food and pharma heat exchangers need 3A, EHEDG or FDA-aligned design with sanitary fittings, electropolished surfaces and CIP capability.

Industries and use cases for industrial heat exchangers

  • Chemical and petrochemical: process heating and cooling, distillation overhead condensers, reactor jackets and waste heat recovery.
  • Food and beverage: pasteurisation, UHT processing, juice cooling, edible oil heating, brewing wort cooling and dairy processing.
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech: fermentation broth cooling, WFI generation, product heating and CIP/SIP heat recovery.
  • Power generation and CHP: feedwater heating, district heating, condensers, intercoolers and combined heat and power systems.
  • Oil and gas: crude preheating, gas dehydration, lube oil cooling, refrigeration and amine plant duty.
  • HVAC and building services: chilled water systems, hot water generation, heat pumps and free-cooling installations.

What locations do we serve for industrial heat exchangers?

As a buyer-to-seller marketplace, we feature industrial heat exchangers from sellers across the UK and beyond. Use our location and distance filters to find equipment near your facility, which can significantly reduce transport costs for heavy shell and tube exchangers.

Can I return an industrial heat exchanger?

As we operate as a buyer-to-seller marketplace, any returns policy must be agreed directly with the seller before purchase. We’d strongly recommend pre-purchase inspection where possible, including a review of pressure test certificates, condition of plates, gaskets or tube bundles, and any thickness measurement reports.
