Plastic machinery refers to the industrial equipment used to process thermoplastic and thermoset polymers into finished products or semi-finished materials. The sector covers several distinct processes: injection moulding (discrete parts), extrusion (continuous profiles, pipes, films, sheets), blow moulding (hollow containers), thermoforming (packaging trays, cups, lids), rotational moulding (large hollow items like tanks) and plastic recycling (granulators, shredders, wash plants, extrusion-based recycling). Each process demands specialised machinery with its own spec terminology.
Quality injection moulding machines and extruders typically last 25-40+ years, the mechanical parts (frames, tie bars, barrels, screws) are robust and most wear components can be replaced or refurbished. Barrel and screw wear is driven by abrasive fillers and glass fibre content; replacement screws and barrel liners are standard refurbishment items. Control systems are typically the shortest-lived component, often retrofitted at 15-20 years.
Plastic processing machinery is heavy capital equipment with long service life, careful specification pays back over decades of operation.
Energy efficiency: modern electric and hybrid injection moulding machines use 30-70% less energy than older hydraulic designs, delivering significant cost savings at today’s electricity prices.
Precision and repeatability: servo-driven clamp, injection and screw axes deliver shot-to-shot consistency essential for quality-critical applications.
Process flexibility: one well-specified machine can run many different products and materials through tooling and recipe changes.
In-house recycling capability: granulators and shredders enable regrind use, reducing material cost and supporting circular plastics targets.
Integration with automation: modern machines integrate with robots, conveyors and MES systems for lights-out production.
The used market is well-developed for plastic machinery, with care, a used machine delivers excellent value:
Major cost savings: quality used injection moulders and extruders typically sell at 30-50% of new price.
Immediate availability: new-build plastic machinery often has 6-12 month lead times. Used stock is available in weeks.
Proven design: machines that have been in production for years have a known reliability and performance profile.
Comprehensive aftermarket: Arburg, Engel, KraussMaffei, Demag, Negri Bossi, Fanuc, Battenfeld, Husky and others all have strong UK aftermarket service.
Sustainability: extending machinery life reduces embodied carbon and supports sustainable manufacturing.
The largest segment of plastic machinery. Specified by clamp tonnage (from 20 to 5,000+ tonnes) and shot size (grams of polymer per cycle). Hydraulic, hybrid (toggle-clamp hydraulic with servo pump) and all-electric designs are available, modern all-electric machines dominate new-build for precision and energy efficiency.
Continuous processes producing profiles, pipes, sheets, films and cable insulation. Single-screw extruders suit commodity polymers; co-rotating twin-screw extruders handle compounding, filler addition and recycled material. Lines include die, calibration, cooling, puller, cutter and winder/stacker components.
Produce hollow containers by inflating a parison of polymer inside a mould. Extrusion blow moulding (EBM) suits bottles, drums and complex shapes; injection blow moulding (IBM) produces small pharmaceutical bottles; injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) creates high-clarity PET bottles for water and soft drinks.
Heat and form plastic sheet (typically PET, PP, PS, PLA) over a mould to produce packaging trays, cups, lids, blister packs and automotive interior parts. Inline thermoformers with integrated cutting and stacking are standard for packaging production.
Granulators reduce scrap, sprues, runners and reject parts to regrind for reuse. Shredders handle larger parts and post-consumer material. Wash plants, extrusion-based recycling lines and densifiers serve the growing plastic recycling sector.
Biaxial rotation of a closed mould while heating produces large, hollow items, tanks, containers, playground equipment, kayaks. Carousel, rock-and-roll and shuttle machines all serve different part sizes and run rates.
For injection moulding: clamp force and shot size: clamp force must exceed the projected part area × process pressure. Shot size should be 30-80% of machine capacity for ideal material dwell time.
For extruders: screw diameter, L/D ratio and drive power: typical L/D ratios are 24:1 to 36:1. Longer barrels suit heat-sensitive materials; higher L/D improves mixing.
Drive technology: all-electric machines offer the best energy efficiency and precision; hydraulic machines offer lower capital cost and robust heavy-duty performance; hybrid machines strike a middle ground.
Control system: Arburg Selogica, Engel CC300, KraussMaffei MC6, Sumitomo Demag NC5 and others each have their advantages. Check spares and training availability.
Barrel and screw condition: wear is the biggest concern on used machines. Ask for wear measurement reports and confirm replacement cost if needed.
Ancillary equipment: include dryers, hoppers, granulators, temperature controllers, robots and conveyors in the total cost-of-ownership assessment.
Packaging: bottles, caps, containers, trays, films, flexible packaging, the largest plastic end-use sector.
Automotive: interior trim, bumpers, under-bonnet components, lighting, fuel systems, moulded in engineering plastics and composites.
Medical device and pharma: syringes, IV components, inhaler parts, diagnostic cartridges and pharma packaging, demanding high precision and cleanroom compatibility.
Construction: pipes, profiles, insulation, cladding, flooring and fittings, extruded and injection-moulded in PVC, PE, PP and PC.
Consumer goods: household containers, toys, kitchenware, personal care packaging and electricals.
Recycling: post-consumer and post-industrial recyclers use granulators, shredders, wash plants and extruders to produce regranulate.
